Lula Belle (Newland) Steele Sep 10, 1921 - Oct 3, 2007 Lula Belle Newland Steele “Granny” - 1921-2007 Lula Belle Newland Steele, 86, of Grayson, Ky., went to have a glorious reunion with her Lord and Savior and her loving husband on Oct. 3, 2007, following an extended illness. She was born Sept. 10, 1921, in Carter County, Ky. She was the daughter of the late Levi Clarence Newland and Stella Mae Blevins Newland. She was a retired cook with the Carter County Board of Education and a member of Barretts Creek Missionary Baptist Church for the past 28 years, where she was a very dedicated member and teacher. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, George Otto Steele; a daughter, Alberta Cotton; her stepmother, Vina Conley Newland; and three sisters, Mae Hall, Gladys Johnson and Jessie Greer. She is survived by three sons, John (Alice) Steele, George (Ada) Steele and Clarence Steele (Cheryl Huffman), all of Grayson; two daughters, Jewell (Lowell Gene) Elliott of Grayson and Sue Taylor (Jerry Weimer) of Crescent Springs, Ky.; a son-in-law, Milford Cotton of Grayson; two sisters, Missouri Blair of Grayson and Jean Dickerson of Cleveland; three brothers, John “Bud” Newland, Paul (Bainton) Newland and Glen (Lois) Newland, all of Grayson; 15 grandchildren, Oralann Cotton, Milberta (David) McKinney, Jackie Cotton, Gary (Valerie) Cotton, John Curtis (Diane) Steele, Ellen Sue (Roger) Justice, Cindy (Duane) Suttles, Missy (Scott) Wallace, Cloma Jean (John) Hall, Loretta (Ernie) Hall, Lowell Eugene (Angel) Elliott, Trina (David) Pennington, Travis Steele, Kelly (Darren) Woyce and Phillip Felty; 21 great-grandchildren, Bradley and Summer Cotton, Scottie Sue (Jason) Salyers, Teresa Joy Justice, Nadalee and Kerrie Steele, Kelly Suttles, Stephanie Wallace, Johnny Gene Hall (Christa Gearhart), Kristy (Jeremy) Thompson, Michael and Snowy Brooke Hall, Tabitha (Kyle) Stewart, Rebecca Hall, Trey and Quincy Elliott, Kyle McGowen, Garrett and William Pennington, Jaelyn Steele, Josh Felty and Amber Rigsby; seven great-great-grandchildren, Kasey Woyce, Austin and Alexis Thompson, Cheyan and Sierea Allen, Janie May Salyers and Keelee Stewart; several nieces and nephews; four very dear special neighbors, Kenny Felty, Lynn Boggs, Chloe and Ruthie; and very special neighbors Linda, Rusty and Dustin Adkins, Kevin, Alice, Caden and Cody McDavid, Alva and Rebecca King and Don Utley, who also loved her and called her Granny. She was known as Granny and Church Granny to every child who knew her because of her love and dedication to her Lord and Savior. Her church family and a host of friends and other family members will sadly mourn her passing. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at Barretts Creek Missionary Baptist Church by Lowell Elliott, Harry Sanders, Jim Stevens and Sean Pierce. Burial will be in East Carter County Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, Oct. 5, 2007, and after noon Saturday at the church. Pallbearers will be Phillip Felty, Travis Steele, Lowell Elliott, Curtis Steele, Jackie Cotton and Michael Hall. Malone Funeral Home in Grayson is in charge of arrangements.
